Why is smoking addictive?

Despite constant warning by various health groups, the global smoking population is still on the rise.

Smoking is a recreational or social activity that involves burning tobacco and inhaling or tasting the smoke that comes from it. It is mainly defined as a recreational form of drug use, yet many people continue to smoke despite being warned by various organizations that smoking endangers health and is habit-forming. Presently, the world's smoking population is getting younger, as teenagers around the world aged 13 to 15 have also started smoking.

We always hear stories from smokers how hard it is to stop smoking, some even saying it's impossible. But how many of us know why smoking is addictive? What is it in cigarettes and tobacco that is so hard to give up?

Addiction to smoking occurs because of a substance in tobacco called nicotine, which is absorbed in the bloodstream as smoke passes through the lungs by inhalation. Some people also chew tobacco, so nicotine is also absorbed in the bloodstream through the mouth's lining. As a psychoactive drug, nicotine acts as a stimulant that causes the liver to release glucose, and the brain's adrenal medulla to release adrenaline. Some smokers have also mentioned that smoking makes them feel relaxed and alert at the same time, and some even felt euphoric. Many people also say that they smoke whenever they need to relieve stress from work, an effect brought about by increased levels of acetylcholine which improves learning, memory, and concentration.

Many smokers often need a substance abuse treatment to free themselves from addiction. However, this freedom from addiction will only be possible if they are committed enough to giving up smoking. Some smokers manage to quit for a week, then a month, then they start smoking again, believing that it's really impossible to quit. They must be willing to subject themselves to drug intervention, where they are given the opportunity to fully understand the gravity of their situation. Only then will they be able to be motivated enough to quit smoking for good.

I don' t agree. I been smoking since my teen years and i am 39 now. Although I smoke. Occationally I don't think of myself as an addict. I do believe people abuse cigarettes to much and thats what is bad. I admit I like to have a smoke on weekends or days off, to relax. I also like to have a drink but im not an alcoholic. I feel cigarettes should be enjoyed in moderation like everything else. Its just people get hooked and smoke all day everyday. Thats when its a problem. If smoking is so bad. They should just stop selling them period. But the government will never allow this because the make millions on the taxes. And yes hospitals, funeral homes, quit smoking aids (i.e. nicorette. Gum. Etc). These all make money and more tax. You cannot tell me the government genuinally cares if people die or not from smoking. The don't. As long as there is money to be made, there will be smoking. Tobacco is what our country was built on. It will never go away.
